India

IND-ghandi2a.jpg

New Delhi, India.  The famous statue of Mahatma Ghandi leading his people.  But over a cliff ??

IND-bull.jpg

Delhi, India. Bulls have free run of the place and it's best not to forget!

IND-Paharganj.jpg

Paharganj District, India.  Hard to believe, but this might not be the fanciest place I've ever visited. But it was probably the most 'adventurous' place up to this point, way back in 2000. It didn't matter much; this was just a multi-day layover on our way to Nepal and Mt. Everest.

IND-fort.jpg

Delhi, India.  The famed Red Fort of Delhi. This fort used to serve as the Royal Palace.

IND-crowd1.jpg

Paharganj District, India.  The blurry, bouncy, cockeyed view from the back seat of a bicycle rickshaw barreling through the crowd in a remote suburb of Delhi. A little nerve-racking for us; the driver didn't seem too concerned.

Here's what happens when you mix free-ranging cows with open-air street markets:  1) cow poops on the ground. Which in this case is the street. 2) moped or rickshaw comes screaming by at a high rate of speed. 3) vehicle impacts big steaming pile of poop. 4) all the market-food within a 20-foot radius gets a shit-shower. And 5) Nobody seems to care!!  It's ok as long as it's cow shit.

As long as we're on the subject of excrement, the human situation can be challenging as well. This is a public toilet, Delhi-style. And it's not even that bad of one. Most mens toilets (for #1 at least) were nothing more than a bunch of guys lined up peeing on a wall or in a gutter, fully out in public for all to see. Many of these 'toilets' were right on busy public streets!  At least this place has a little privacy. But the smell ...

IND-sunrise.jpg

Delhi, India. This is a sunrise from the roof of our hotel.  So where's the sun?? You can just barely make it out through all the smoke and haze in the middle of the sky, just right of center. Yep, the air ain't so clear over here.. To this day when I smell a wood fire on a hot muggy day I think of Delhi.
