Bali

Bali-UlunDanu.jpg

Ulun Danu Temple, Bali.   If this doesn't convey the exotic-ness of Bali I don't know what does. Balinese temples of all shapes and sizes dot the island. All are beautiful but this one is really special - built on a small island in a remote mountain lake.

This page is under construction!

Bali-paddy.jpg

Near Kelapa, Bali. After about 10 straight days of surfing I took a break and headed north to visit my friend from Florida who moved here several years ago. He had built the most amazing house, just a complete work of art. This was the view of the terraced rice paddies from his house. Beautiful scenery like this covers Bali.

Bali-UbudFields.jpg

Ubud, Bali.  Rice paddies and steamy tropical jungle in the mountainous interior of Bali.

Bali-nrUbud.jpg

Ubud, Bali.  A rice-paddy shrine for the field workers, with Mt Agung in the background. Agung's an active volcano, sitting right on the Pacific Ring of Fire. Bali, Java, and Sumatra are all on this line of active volcanoes.

Bali-Balangan2.jpg

Balangan, Bali.  And then there's the surf. That was mainly what I came here for and Bali does not disappoint. I found this great wave while driving around one day, a short distance from all the super-popular, super-crowded surf spots of southern Bali. It was a fun wave and nice break from the crowds.

Bali-2621.jpg

Impossibles, Bali.  This photo was shot from the front porch of my temporary Bali home. It was in an unbeatable location : right in the middle of the big-name surf breaks, with aptly-named "Impossibles" straight out front (pictured). From here, the world-class surf breaks Uluwatu and Padang-Padang are a short distance to the left; Bingin, Dreamland, and Balangan are to the right. All six of these insane spots are along just a 3-mile stretch of coast. "Impossibles" gets its name for the impossible speed it takes to make this very fast wave. I sure paid my dues here. But got some rides I'll never forget, too.

Bali-Ulu1.jpg

Uluwatu, Bali.  I wasn't going to put pix of myself on this website but here I just couldn't resist. This is the fast & fun wave at Uluwatu. Uluwatu is a large area and is actually broken up into at least 5 different sections, each with its own name. This is the 'Racetrack' section, and I thought it was an appropriate name given the speed of the wave. It can be an intimidating place with shallow reefs, large crowds, and powerful waves. And you paddle out through a sea cave!

Bali-mask.jpg

A Balinese ceremonial mask. It still gets used. Traditions still persist here, especially in rural areas.

Bali-Lovina.jpg

Lovina, Bali.   If you're a scuba diver, this is your place.  Lovina is the dive center of Bali with its clear, calm waters and nearby tropical reefs. And great sunsets. The big mountain on the horizon is Baluran, a dormant volcano on the neighboring island of Java.

Bali-flowers.jpg

Bali.  Flowers, flowers, everywhere. It's part of what makes Bali so beautiful, and makes the island smell so GOOD!
